Five Countries Cycling Tour

Your journey begins in Maastricht, where you'll start cycling towards Liège. You'll follow the Jeker River to the village of Kanne and pass the Ternaaien locks before continuing on the RAVeL trail through Visé to Liège. The last stretch takes you through industrial zones. Once in Liège, you can explore the historic center or enjoy the parks and boulevards along the river before settling in for the night.

Cycling through Liège, you'll follow the Meuse River, passing the industrial sights of Seraing and the Val St. Lambert crystal factory. On quiet backroads, you’ll ride towards Huy, with a brief stop near the Tihange nuclear reactor. The Grande Place in Huy is perfect for a lunch break. As you head to Namur, the scenery transitions from industrial to natural. In Namur, you can explore the Citadel de Namur, with its underground passages and stunning river views.

Similarly to the days before, you will keep following the Meuse River along the scenic RAVeL route, this time toward Dinant. Beyond it, you’ll reach Château Freyr, once a summer residence for the Dukes of Beaufort-Spontin. Continuing, you’ll cycle along a former railway line from Hastière to Mariembourg before crossing into France. Your destination will be the historic town of Givet, home to the impressive Charlemont Citadel.

Keeping with the Meuse River, one of the day’s highlights will be a visit to the picturesque town of Monthermé, known for its religious landmarks such as the Abbey of Laval Dieu and the Church of Saint-Leger. Your destination is Charleville-Mézières, with its lovely town center. If needed, you can also take a train from Givet or other points to shorten the otherwise quite lengthy ride.

The day will begin with a ride along the Voie Verte Trans-Ardennes to Sedan, famous for one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. After Sedan, you'll leave the International Meuse Route and follow a course connecting the end of the Meuse Route with the start of the Vennbahn Route. On the French side, you’ll ascend towards the border upon a quiet road. Once in Belgium, a descent will take you to Bouillon.

As you cycle through the Ardennes, today will be the most challenging part of the journey. Leaving Bouillon, you'll climb a narrow road and continue on country roads through southern Belgium. A good stop for lunch is in Libramont-Chevigny, home to the Museum of the Celts. You'll then follow the RAVeL route along the former railway line to Bastogne, where WWII monuments commemorate the Battle of the Ardennes.

Starting from the “Gare du Sud” railway station, you will follow RAVeL 163 north. South of Gouvy, you will head east towards the border with Luxembourg and cycle through the country's dynamic landscape until you reach the Vennbahn Route in Huldange, Luxembourg's highest point. A little later, you’ll cross back into Belgium, continue to Hemmeres, a German enclave, and finally to Sankt-Vith.

You’ll cycle along the newly paved path from Sankt-Vith to Waimes, passing Montenau with its ham smokery, Sourbrodt, a former Vennbahn station, and Kalterherberg. Next, you will veer off the Vennbahn to visit Monschau, where you’ll spend the night. This charming town in the Eifel region is known for its picturesque half-timbered houses, inviting shops, cozy cafes, and great restaurants.

On your final cycling day, you will return from the center of Monschau to the Vennbahn Rail Trail. You can visit the historic town of Kornelimünste on the way. After a long descent, you’ll arrive in Aachen, once the heart of Charlemagne’s empire. From there, it’s just a short ride to the border with the Netherlands and the town of Kerkrade. From there, you can shorten the stage by taking a train to Maastricht, relaxing as you watch the scenic hills of southern Limburg pass by.

Before you leave, you can explore the Maastricht Underground or visit Vrijthof Square with St. Servatius Church and the Basilica of Our Lady. Alternatively, taking a stroll along the Maas River or wandering through Wyck, known for its boutiques and cozy cafes, could be just as fitting.
